Review: Urban Decay 24/7 Lip Pencil in Ozone

When I was still a makeup newbie (not that I'm a pro now, lol, but I think I'm much better than - say - 1 and a half years ago when I first started), I thought primers are a luxury and not at all a necessity. Well, I have outgrown that. Now I think primers are actually very important. It makes a great deal of difference when I use primer under my foundation and when I don't. With primer, my foundation glides on better and stays put longer. How can I say no to that?

Funnily enough, when it comes to primers, Urban Decay seems to be THE brand for me. I've never planned it to be like that but out of all primers I've tried, so far only Urban Decay's that works for me. I am in love with both Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Primer (for face) and the famous Urban Decay Primer Potion (for eyes). Now I'm taking this primer fixation to another level; introducing my new favorite lip primer...

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Lip Pencil in Ozone

Ozone is simply a clear lip pencil. It won't even cancel out your lip color (if you have pigmented lips), but it works great as a lip primer. Usually, without primer, my lipstick would only last for approximately 2-3 hours. After eating, 90% of the lipstick would be gone gone gone. With this as primer, my lipstick would last at least 2 times longer. Yesterday, after lunch, I noticed that I still have about 60% lipstick on, which made me happy because then I didn't have to worry about getting to the restroom as fast as I could to reapply my lipstick. I look dead pale without lipstick!

Another great thing this product does is that it makes lipstick glides on better and applies more evenly. If you like wearing bold lip colors, this would be great as well. Just apply it outside your lip line before you apply your lipstick. That will prevent your lipstick from feathering and yes, it really works.

Unfortunately, there's always a downside. I find that this product wouldn't last very long if used daily. I have to sharpen the pencil every 2 times of use. Maybe I have huge lips, LOL, but I'm not kidding! I have to slather my lips with it to make it work.

Finally, would I repurchase it?

Well, I just found out that MAC has the same kind of product called Prep+Prime Lip Primer, which contains more product AND is cheaper. So, I might try the MAC one before deciding whether or not I should repurchase this. I do enjoy this product so much, though. I'm clearly a lippie gal and this product completes my life.

In case you're wondering, MAC Prep+Prime Lip Primer is $14.50 (1.7g) and 24/7 Glide on Pencil by Urban Decay is $17 (1.2g).

  1. I've never thought of using lip primer, does it somehow work like lip liner? and I think 17 bucks for a lip primer is too pricey...

  2. I've tried using it both ways (as a lipliner/primer, and outside the lipline) but I never thought of it as a primer per se. But I guess it is :) I like how it mattifies the lips and is sliiightly sticky

  3. I would love to know how the MAC version compares to UD...I've tried the maybelline color sensational clear lipliner but I'm not sure how much I love it haha x

  4. Oh great review Fifi! I didn't even know this product existed. I bought a clear Sally Hansen lipliner but it sucks haha so maybe I'll try this next. ^^ UD is known for having awesome primes after all. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

  5. Great review Fifi. I haven't tried the UD lip pencil. It sort of sounds like any regular lip pencil since whenever I use a lip pencil, it does prolong my lipstick quite a bit. I have the MAC Prep + Prime lip and I'm sort of on the fence about it. I'm not sure if it works better than a lip pencil...but when I go clubbing I actually double up and use the MAC Prep + Prime lip, lip pencil, lipstick and gloss ;) It's a bit of work but it definitely helps the staying power when I combine both.

  7. Never thought too much about primers myself either. This product sounds great! My lips are pigmented so a lot of lip colours just don't even show (when I do wear them... which is not too often haha). If you try the MAC one, please share! I'd like to know which one is better too =)
